Kenya’s COVID-19 cases reach 5,533
Kenya on Friday reported 149 new COVID-19 infections, bringing its total tally to 5,533 cases from 158,404 cumulative tests.
The figures were announced by the Chief Administrative Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Rashid Aman.
Aman also announced that five more people had died from the disease, bringing Kenya’s total fatalities to 137.
The East African country has seen a recent hike in new infections, attributed to an increase in community transmission.
The capital, Nairobi, remains the worst affected by the disease in Kenya, accounting for most of the infections.
In a bid to curb further spread of COVID-19, the Kenyan government imposed a nationwide curfew and a partial lockdown among other measures.
The measures are set to run until July 6, but the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Mutahi Kagwe, is keen on an extension, citing unpreparedness by some counties.
In an address to Governors on Thursday, President Uhuru Kenyatta told the leaders of Kenya’s 47 counties that a reopening of the country’s economy will depend on the state of preparedness they exhibit in their territories.
