Kenya’s Bomb squad sent to detonate IEDs planted by Al-shabaab along border with Somalia
A bomb squad has been deployed along the roads in Kenya near the Somalia border to detonated IEDs (Improvised explosive devices) planted by the Al-Shabaab militants.
This came after reports of IEDs attacks along the Kiunga -Baragoi-Milimani area which has claimed many lives recently.
“The officers have been combing the areas to look for the explosives, as well as pursuing the Al-Shabaab militants hiding in the vast Boni forest,” said senior military officer who declined to be named on Thursday, speaking to Xinhua
Al-Shabaab has started ambushing security agents with IEDs, mainly targeting the General Service, Administration Police and Regular Police in unarmoured vehicles.
Lastest attack happened on Tuesday when seven security officers were reported dead and three others injured when their vehicle ran over a landmine in Lamu region in Kenya’s coastal strip.
Kenya’s government is set to equip the Kenyan police with armoured personnel carriers (APCs) to equip them in better performing duties without reliance on the military. It also plans to provide officers deployed in volatile areas with vehicles that are mine resistant and ambush protected.
