Kenya’s biggest mobile service provider has appointed its new Chief Executive Officer, nearly four months after the death of former CEO Bob Collymore.
Safaricom’s Board of Directors issued a statement on Thursday announcing the appointment of Peter Ndegwa as the new CEO, with effect from April 2020.
Currently, the position is held on an interim basis by Michael Joseph, who also served in the role on a permanent basis between July 2000 and November 2010.
“Peter brings a wealth of experience in General Management, Commercial and Business Strategy, Sales and Finance Operations, having spent over 25 years in various roles within the Financial Services and Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sectors in Africa and Europe,” Safaricom said in a statement by Chairman Nicholas Nganga.
Ndegwa brings a wealth of experience, having served as CEO of various international companies, including Guinness Nigeria PLC and Guinness Ghana Breweries PLC.
His appointment as Safaricom’s new CEO makes him the first Kenyan to hold the position since 2000 when the company was re-launched as a joint venture between Vodafone UK and Telkom Kenya.
Safaricom is East Africa’s most profitable company.
