Kenyan President commissions Riruta – Kajiado commuter train project
Kenyan President William Ruto broke ground for the construction of the Riruta – Kajiado Railways project on Friday.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, Ruto said he was keen on seeing through all infrastructural projects that have already started for the benefit of all Kenyans.
“This railway is important as it will reduce the cost of transportation. This will have a ripple effect on the cost of living. It is going to slash the transport costs by fifty percent,” he said.
He further expressed that the railway will have the capacity to transport 10,000 people per day and significantly reduce traffic jams.
The railway line will be built and financed by China Road and Bridge Corporation. It is poised to benefit residents of the Kajiado region and other parts of the country by providing a safer and more reliable option for travel.
The 12.5-kilometer rail line is expected to ease movement of people in the greater Nairobi metropolitan area in and out of the capital.
Transport Minister Kipchumba Murkomen lauded the cooperation of the Kenya Railways, China Road and Bridge Corporation, and the government which made the launched project a possibility.
“We hope to also extend similar projects to other parts and make the transportation of commuters to their workplaces more organized. Our people will move from walking on foot to a proper mass transport,” he said.
The minister expressed hope that locals would benefit through the job opportunities created by the Nairobi Master Plan project.
