Kenya’s police and army are pursuing suspected kidnappers into Somalia, after a police officer was shot and two Cuban doctors were abducted in northern Kenya Friday morning.
Charles Owino, police spokesperson confirmed to reporters that two doctors and their police escort were attacked Friday morning in a road ambush in Kenya’s Mandera town while on their way to work at Mandera hospital.
Owino added that the car the victims were travelling in has been recovered and the driver is currently in custody.
“All the critical agencies of the state have been mobilise to pursue the criminals and rescue the victims,” he told reporters, adding that more details will be released throughout the day.
Kenya’s National Police Service earlier tweeted of the attack, urging people to remain calm.

The attack raises questions about security in northern Kenya.
The armed group Al-Shabaab is known to operate in the area and has long threatened Kenya’s security with attacks targeting Kenya’s military as well as civilians.
