A Kenyan opposition politician, Miguna Miguna who was yesterday charged with treason over the symbolic presidential “swearing in” of opposition leader Raila Odinga, was deported to Canada.

Miguna’s lawyer, John Khaminwa wrote on Twitter that Miguna was put into a KLM flight departing Nairobi for Amsterdam shortly before 10 pm local time Tuesday night.

Interior ministry claims Mr. Miguna denounced his Kenyan citizenship years back. Spokesman Mwenda Njoka said the lawyer never bothered to reclaim it, local online website, Daily Nation reports.

Earlier on Tuesday, Miguna appeared at a court in Kajiado County. He had been in police custody since Friday with his whereabouts unknown.

He was charged with “being present and consenting to the administration of an oath to commit a capital offence, namely treason”, the charge sheet said.

Miguna refused to enter a plea, saying his case should be heard in a court in Nairobi.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga ran against Uhuru Kenyatta in an election last August which was nullified by the Supreme Court on procedural grounds. A repeat poll was held in October and Kenyatta won. Odinga boycotted the poll claiming it was not fair.
