Kenyan hospital under investigation over infant deaths
Pumwani Maternity Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Catherine Mutinda is one of the three top administration officials suspended while the government looks into the deaths of 12 infants at the facility.
The corpses of 12 babies were found stuffed inside boxes during a surprise visit by the governor of Nairobi County, Mike Mbuvi alias ‘Sonko’.
Hospital administrator, Zaddock Angahya and the gynecologist on duty, Dr James Kamau were also suspended and a caretaker board is now overseeing urgent reforms at the hospital so that quality healthcare is restored at the facility.
The cause of the deaths and why the babies were stuffed in boxes instead of taken to a holding room has not yet been established. However according to local daily newspaper sources the infants are said to have died at the weekend following a power blackout.
It has also been reported that during the raid that was live on his Facebook account, an administrator told Governor Sonko that only one infant had died since Friday and that was the only body being kept at the facility.
Pumwani is one of the top public maternity centers in Kenya. But it has been plagued by controversy for many years, including allegations about the mistreatment of pregnant women and baby theft.
