Kenyan governor eyes better tourism ties with China
Kenya is looking to boost its tourism relations with China, and players within the government are confident the East Africa country can lure more Chinese tourists.
Kiraitu Murungi, the Governor of Meru County in the central region of the country, said his country can learn a lot from China’s tourism exploits to benefit its own sector.
“I have had the occasion to visit the yellow mountains in China in the City of Huangshan and I was amazed at the number of tourists who visit the yellow mountain, about 67 million per annum. Mount Kenya is a very beautiful Mountain, about 40% of that mountain is found in Meru County. There are virtually no tourists only a few mountain climbers. So, we are determined to work with our Chinese partners to see if we can develop mountain tourism,” he said in an interview with CGTN.
Kiraitu’s call comes after the October 1 celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
While expressing solidarity with China on its milestone, various leaders across Africa hailed the relations between the continent and the Asian country, saying it can only get better.
“Congratulations to Your Excellency President Xi Jinping and the people of China on commemoration of the 70th anniversary of your great Nation. On this occasion, I pledge to further enhance our historic, friendly and fraternal ties,” Tanzanian President John Magufuli said.
“China shows it is possible to reach new economic and social heights all while maintaining one’s cultural identity. One of the indispensable elements of this is a clear vision and strong leadership. President Xi Jinping is a visionary,” Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina said.
