Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta has urged striking doctors and nurses to return to work, saying nearly 20 people have died as the strike enters its fourth day Thursday.

While visiting a hospital in Eastern Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta said, “Good faith requires people to understand that we do not put the lives of our fellow Kenyans at risk, especially when there is an atmosphere where dialogue is already ongoing. Let us partner together, we will find a solution, but please let us not allow the innocent citizen to suffer, who has nothing to do with the problem.”

Healthcare workers are accusing the government of being slow to increase salaries. They began strike after Sunday’s failed negotiations between unions and government on wage increases.

Meanwhile over 200 newly recruited health workers in Nakuru are expected to report to work today after the county government made good its threat to employ new staff to take up various roles in its county facilities in the wake of the ongoing strike, Kenya’s local media the Daily Nation reports
