A Kenyan court on Friday granted bail to a county governor charged with conspiracy to defraud the government and abuse of office.
Sospeter Ojaamong, the governor of Busia County in western Kenya, was arrested in a government crackdown on corruption.
The Governor and his three of his Cabinet members facing graft were released on Sh1million cash bail each in the case of the alleged theft of Sh20 million county money.
In a ruling on Friday, Anti-Corruption Court Magistrate Douglas Ogoti told the four to report to the investigating officer at Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission EACC’s Malaba office every last Friday of the month.
The Governor’s lawyer James Orengo had wanted the magistrate to give them temporary freedom but Ogoti opted for a “wholesome and reasonable ruling”.
The EACC revealed that at least four more governors are likely to face charges once investigations into various cases are complete; this is according to a report tabled in Parliament recently.
