Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced that the country will hold a new presidential election on October 17.
This comes following the nullification of the August 8 presidential election result by the Supreme Court on September 1.
The court ordered a repeat of the vote in 60 days after nullifying the result from the initial election, citing malpractices.
In its announcement however, the IEBC declared that only President Uhuru Kenyatta and main opposition leader Raila Odinga will be on the ballot, locking out the other contestants.
The previous vote had eight contestants, though the other six did not match Uhuru and Raila’s numbers.
The Supreme Court in its ruling said IEBC overlooked the constitution, committed various illegalities affecting integrity of polls.
The court however said it only gave a brief ruling, adding that a comprehensive ruling is set to be issued in 21 days.
