Kenya wins Women’s 5000m at the London Diamond League
Kenya’s Mercy Cherono won the London Diamond League 5000m, followed by American Molly Huddle, third was another Kenyan Janet Kisa. Ehiopia’s Haftamnesh Tesfaye was fifth.
London Olympic and World champion Usain Bolt ran his fastest 100 metres of the year on the first day of the London’s Anniversary Games, Friday. Bolt was making a return from a six week absence on the track due to a pelvic injury on a rainy night in London. Despite a sluggish start in the final the world record holder claimed victory in 9.87seconds to set a new season’s best. There was a convincing win for Britain’s World and Olympic champion Mo Farah, over 3,000 metres. It was Farah’s first race in Britain since his coach Alberto Salazar was implicated in doping allegations. On a night where the weather caused the postponement of the men’s pole vault, there was a big shock in the men’s high jump where favourite Mutaz Essa Basrhim on Qatar was beaten into third. The event was won by Italy’s Marco Fassinotti, who cleared 2.31 metres
