Kenya tops Tanzania in thrilling AFCON match

Read < 1 minute

Kenya twice came from behind twice to beat Tanzania Thursday night in one the most thrilling matches so far in AFCON 2019.

The final score was 3-2

Simon Msuva and Mbwana Samatta put Tanzania in front but Michael Olunga and Johanna Omolo leveled for the Harambee Stars before Olunga struck the winning goal with eleven minutes remaining.

It was a match both coaches described as ‘crazy’

“It was completely crazy and the coach at this time is just a spectator,” Kenya coach Sebastien Migne said. “The players wrote history tonight, now everything is possible, we have nothing to lose.”

“There were a lot of crazy things….we committed a lot of mistakes,” said  Tanzania coach Emmanuel Amunike. “You practise and practise, but players are players and as a coach, you stand on the touch-line and you are helpless.”

Kenya, who had won only once in 15 previous matches in the competition, have three points from two games in Group C, level with Senegal, their next opponent.

Even if Kenya lose their final group match against Senegal, they can still squeeze into the knockout phase as one of the four best third-place teams.

With Thursday’s loss, Tanzania became the first team to be officially eliminated from championship contention.
