
Kenya thrashes Malawi to advance in CAF Women’s Olympic qualifier

Kenya on Sunday thumped Malawi 3-0 at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos to advance to the third round of the 2020 CAF Women’s Olympic qualifiers following a 5-3 aggregate win.
The Harambee Starlets came into the match looking to make the most of home advantage having lost the first leg 3-2 to the She-Flames in Blantyre on Wednesday.
Cynthia Shilwatso opened the scoring in the 18th minute tucking in from close range after Malawi failed to clear the ball in its penalty area.
Mwanahalima Adam doubled the Kenyans’ lead in the 78th minute and completed her brace 10 minutes later to seal an emphatic win.
Kenya will face either Ghana or Gabon in the next round. Ghana host Gabon at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on Tuesday holding a 3-0 lead from their first leg encounter.
The winner of the qualifying tournament will get a direct ticket to the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament Tokyo 2020 while the runner-up will play in a playoff against Chile, who is South America’s participant having finished second in the CONMEBOL qualifying tournament.
The dates of the intercontinental play-off matches are still to be confirmed, according to football’s world governing body, FIFA.
