Kenya Rugby Union reverses decision to cancel season

The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) on Monday reversed its decision to cancel the 2019/2020 season due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In a statement issued on Monday, the KRU said that the season was now suspended after it had arrived at the decision following week-long consultations with the clubs.
“Following further consultations with clubs over the past one week regarding cancellation of the KRU calendar for the 2019/2020 season, the KRU is persuaded that stakeholders prefer a scenario where the season comes to a conclusion once the COVID-19 situation and its various restrictions ease,” the statement read in part.
“KRU and Clubs have thus agreed to form a consultative committee to develop various scenarios and timelines under which the season can be concluded all factors considered.”
On March 9, the KRU announced that it had cancelled all league and cup competitions this season, including The Kenya Cup, The Championship, Nationwide leagues, Enterprise & Mwamba Cup.
The Union said that its primary concern was the health and safety of all its stakeholders.
“Any decision on the resumption of any Rugby activities and fixtures will be subject to direction and guideline by The Ministry of Health and Ministry of Sports,” the KRU said then.
Several sporting events in Kenya have been affected by the coronavirus. The World Athletics U20 Championships, the Kenyan Premier League, the Magical Kenya Open Golf Championship and the Safari Rally have all been postponed.
