Kenya leads Africa in Olympic medal standings

The 2024 Paris Olympic Games concluded on Sunday, with the U.S. topping the medal table.

According to the medal count, the U.S. leads, followed by China, Japan, and Australia, with the hosts, France, wrapping up the top five.

In Africa, Kenya leads the continent with four gold medals, two silver, and five bronze.

The East African country got two gold medals through Beatrice Chebet in the 5,000m and 10,000m races.

Emanuel Wanyonyi also won gold in the 800 metres, while Faith Kipyegon set an Olympic Record in the 1,500-metre race with a time of 3: 51.29.

Algeria is second with two gold and one bronze medal. Kaylia Nemour won the sole gold medal, making history by becoming the first African to win a medal in artistic gymnastics. Boxer Imane Khelif won welterweight gold.

South Africa is third on the medal list, with swimmer Tatjana Smith winning one gold medal. They also won silver and three bronze medals.

Ethiopia is fourth, with one gold medal in the men’s marathon through Tamirat Tola and three silver medals.

Egypt completes Africa’s top five, with one gold from Ahmed Elgendy in modern pentathlon, and one silver and bronze.
