Kenya launches first locally made deep sea fishing vessel

Read < 1 minute

Kenya has launched its first ever locally built and locally owned deep sea vessel.

The ship is expected to substantially raise harvests and firm the coastal town, Mombasa’s position on the global fisheries map. The initiative is supported by local bank, KCB and the County Government of Mombasa. The vessel, christened MV Mombasa 001 was constructed at a cost of 150,000 dollars and is expected to increase fish harvest to over 40 thousand kilograms per month. Fish production from the Indian Ocean has constantly remained low, with studies showing that there is immense potential for higher fish production.

This has left Kenya susceptible to an increased number of fish imports.
