Kenya has gained praise at the ongoing United Nations Environment Assembly in the country’s capital Nairobi, for its efforts to curb pollution by banning the manufacture, sale and use of plastic bags.
The president of the 2017 UNEA, Dr Edgar Gutiérrez, praised Kenya for its efforts in fighting environmental pollution.
Gutiérrez called on all countries to commit to the implementation of concrete domestic policies and laws to make the planet pollution free.
“Our collective goal must be to embrace ways to reduce pollution drastically,” Dr Gutiérrez, said.
“Only through stronger collective action, beginning in Nairobi this week, can we start cleaning up the planet globally and save countless lives.” He further said
He praised Kenya for pushing the agenda and setting pace for many other countries by banning plastic bags
Kenya banned plastic bag use in September, a major step towards reduction of plastic related pollution in the country.
The country has also adopted measures to safely process mountains of e-waste
Millions of tonnes of the world’s eWaste end up in African countries due to a lack of policy implementation and enforcement.
