Kenya has disbanded the Department of Refugee Affairs.
Reports indicate the move’s meant to pave way for the closure of the Kakuma and Dadaab refugee camps.
Authorities say Kenya shoulders a, quote, ‘very heavy economic, security, and environmental burden’ by hosting refugees.
Government says the decision will have an adverse affect on the lives of refugees, but asked the international community to back the move.
Somali refugees will be repatriated back to their home country.
Dadaab hosts around 600 thousand refugees, whereas Kakuma houses 200 thousand. Some families have lived there for generations.
