Kenya Deputy President visits African nations to drum support for AU candidate
Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto was in Chad to meet with President Idris Deby to seek support for Kenya’s African Union Commission Chair candidate Amina Mohammed who is currently the cabinet secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kenya.
Ruto said that Kenya’s candidate has experience and knowledge to drive the African Agenda forward. He said “Ambassador Amina sits in the Executive Council of Africa Agenda 2063 and understands where we want to take Africa.”
Chad has nominated her long serving Foreign Affairs Minister Moussa Faki Mahamat for the same position of chairperson of the African Union Commission but Kenya believes President Deby has two candidates to consider for the January 2017 elections, Moussa or Amina.
President Deby emphasised that whoever will be elected should push for reforms that Africans desire within the United Nations and avoid taking instructions from outside the continent. “We do not want someone who will take instructions from outside Africa. Whoever will be elected must drive the African agenda and push for reforms within the United Nations.”
Ruto also held talks with Cote d’Ivoire President Alassane Ouattara yesterday to further lobby for the support for the AUC chair candidate in Abidjan before going to Ghana to meet with President John Dramani Mahama
