The Kenyan government has deployed additional security after clashes broke out between Kenyan citizens and members of Ethiopia’s Dassanech community along the Kenya-Ethiopia border on Saturday.

Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, Kipchumba Murkomen, said that calm had returned to the area, and the country’s head of police was leading efforts to contain the situation.

Murkomen added that the Kenyan government had engaged their Ethiopian counterparts in an effort to broker peace between the two communities.

“We will do everything possible to keep our people safe at all times,” Murkomen said.

According to Reuters, police in Kenya’s Turkana County said that at least 22 Kenyan fishermen were unaccounted for following the clashes at Lopeimukat and Natira near the Omo River.
