Kenya Airways makes formal bid to run country’s major airport
Kenya Airways has made a formal application to take over management of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
The bid is part of the airline’s restructuring plan aimed at giving greater control of the airport considered a major hub for African air travel.
The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), which manages the country’s airports, made the announcement with plan that will enable Kenya Airways to grow the aviation business in Kenya.
In a statement, KAA managing director Jonny Andersen said that the application, which outlines how the national carrier will support and grow the aviation business in Kenya, will be granted if its meets approval from the airports regulator.
“In addition, KAA must satisfy itself that the proposal is feasible and provides for value for money to both KAA and the public before implementation,” said Mr Andersen in a statement.
KAA has appointed an adviser to assist and guide comprehensive due diligence and an evaluation process for the project.
The planned merger is part of a plan to deepen the airline’s recovery after a string of losses.
Kenya’s cabinet in June approved the restructuring plan.
