Jorge Sampaoli loses job as Argentina coach after disappointing World Cup outing
Argentina’s football manager Jorge Sampaoli has been sacked from his position following a disappointing FIFA World Cup campaign.
La Albiceleste managed only one win in the four games they played in Russia, even though they went into the tournament as one of the favourites.
The Lionel Messi-led team drew 1-1 with World Cup first-timers Iceland, before losing 3-0 to Croatia, then beating Nigeria 2-1 in the final Group D round of matches.
The South Americans progressed into the Round of 16 as runners up, but lost 4-3 to eventual World Cup winners France.
Following the end of the World Cup, Argentina parted ways with Sampaoli, saying the decision was “mutually agreed”.
Sampaoli, 58, took charge of his home country in May 2017 and the team scraped through qualifying.
Physical trainer Jorge Desio and video analyst Matias Manna have also left with Sampaoli.
“Today, the Argentine Football Association and the former national team coach, Jorge Sampaoli, have mutually agreed to the termination of their contract,” a statement from the Argentina Football Association read in part.
