Italian prosecutors arrive in Egypt to discuss probe into Giulio Regeni’s death
Italy’s deputy chief prosecutor is in Egypt to discuss the developments in the investigations into the killing of Italian student Giulio Regeni.
Sergio Colaiocco is reported to have arrived in Cairo on Tuesday, and was welcomed by Egyptian prosecutors.
Regeni, who was doing postgraduate research into Egyptian trade unions, went missing on Jan. 25. His body, showing signs of torture, was found in a roadside ditch on the outskirts of Cairo on Feb. 3.
The investigations into the circumstances of Regeni’s death have provoked tensions between the two countries, with Italy accusing Egyptian security authorities of torturing the Italian to death.
Egypt has denied these accusations, and is still conducting investigations to unravel the mystery behind Regeni’s death.
Regeni had been researching independent labor unions in Egypt for his doctorate studies at Cambridge University, and had been in contact with the leaders of the street vendors’ union.
