Islamic movement says soldiers attacked “defenseless people”
More details are emerging about this weekend’s clash between the Nigerian army and a minority Muslim group in the country’s north.
The army claims the group, known as the Islamic Movement, tried to assassinate its chief of staff. The group however denies this, saying the army killed hundreds of its followers. A local hospital says it has at least 60 bodies in its morgue.
Calls are mounting for an investigation into exactly what happened in the town of Zaria on Sunday. According to accounts from residents, parts of the town were turned into a battleground as the army sent in tanks.
The military has now conceded that there were casualties, and that it arrested the leader of the group, Ibrahim Zakzaky.
