Skin lightening is a massive industry in Africa. Women around the continent spend millions a year to lighten their complexions, despite the health risks posed by many of the chemicals used in the process. It’s true for China as well, where women use creams, pills, injections, and even surgery to become lighter. The industry in China is worth a staggering two billion US dollars. Our reporter Hu Chao spent some time with young Chinese women who are getting laser treatment for whiter skin.
