According to a police detective, Former Sudan President, Omar Hassan al-Bashir received $90 million from Saudi royals before being overthrown.
The revelations came during the opening of the hearing of Bashir’s trial on corruption charges.
Senior police officer, Ahmed Ali testified that Bashir had admitted to receiving part of the money from envoys sent by the Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman. Bashir’s attorney dismissed the accusations.
“The accused told us that the money was part of a sum of 25 million U.S. dollars sent to him by Prince Mohammed bin Salman to be used outside of the state budget,” Ali said. Ali also testified that Bashir admitted to receiving two previous payments of 35 million U.S. dollars and 30 million U.S. dollars from Saudi King Abdullah, who died in 2015.
Bashir who ruled Sudan for 30 years also face charges of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide from the International Criminal Court over his role in the Darfur.
