South Sudan's President Salva Kiir welcomes his Sudan counterpart Omar Hassan al-Bashir outside his Presidential office in Juba

The East African regional bloc of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) requested Sudan’s president Omer al-Bashir to facilitate the ongoing efforts to end the inter-South Sudanese conflict. Sudan tribune reported Monday.

IGAD is appealing for help to try and quell the crisis, while the UN is calling for those committing atrocities in the country to be held accountable for their crimes.

Human rights groups have been putting pressure on IGAD, accusing it of failing to halt atrocities in South Sudan. The conflict has raged on and off for months, with every effort at the negotiating table so far failing.

Sudanese foreign ministry spokesperson, Ali al-Sadiq on Sunday vowed that Sudan would exert the necessary efforts to prevent further deterioration of the security situation in South Sudan.

He also vowed to help stop flow of new refugees from South Sudan.
