The world of athletics will take a particular signifance for African athletes later on Monday when the finals of two key races traditionally dominated by Africans get underway in Beijing.
Kenya will parade two top athletes, who led a Kenyan clean sweep of the event four years ago in South Korea.
Vivian Cheruiyot, Sally Kipyego and Betsy Saina will lead Kenya’s medal hunt against a well oiled Ethiopian machine comprising Gelete Burka, Belaynesh Oljira and Alemitu Heroye.
The highlight of the day will be the finals of the men’s 3000 meters steeplechase where top runners in the world, including three time champion Ezekiel Kemboi will feature for Kenya alongside three other top rated athletes.
Four African nations will compete in this event, but American Evan JAGER remains a credible threat to all.
Just a day after winning gold in the first event of the IAAF Championships in Beijing, men’s marathon champion Ghirmay Ghebreslassie from Eritrea took time out from his busy schedule to spend the day taking in what the Chinese capital has to offer.
There were a total of 16 events, including four finals, highlighted by the men’s 100-meter run.
On Sunday the men’s 100-meter final provided the matchup everyone wanted to see, as Usain Bolt and Justin Gatlin breezed through their respective heats to set up a showdown in the final. The Jamaican star came out on top with a time of 9.79 seconds, one-10th of a second better than Gatlin.
