The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday passed a resolution to formally proceed with an impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump.

The resolution obtained a 232-196 win, with just two Democrats voting against it, and no Republicans supporting it.

The vote was seen as the first formal test of support for the impeachment in the House of Representatives.

President Trump is accused of withholding congressionally approved military aid from Ukraine in order to pressure Kyiv to investigate former vice president Joe Biden.

Trump has denied any wrongdoing, labelling the impeachment inquiry a “witch hunt.”

Soon after the Thursday vote, he tweeted: “The Greatest Witch Hunt In American History!”

The vote moves the inquiry into a new stage, which could see articles of impeachment recommended against President Trump. If that happened, and the House voted to pass the articles, a trial would be held in the Senate.

If the impeachment is successful, Donald Trump will become just the third president in U.S. history to be impeached.
