Heroic Ethiopian runs part of her Rio Olympics 3,000m steeplechase hit with just one shoe
Ethiopian athlete Etenesh Diro was forced to run the last 800 meters of the 3,000 meters steeplechase race with just one shoe after she lost one side in a fall during the race.
Diro, a finalist in the London Olympics event four years ago, lost her shoe after she fell down during the last of three heats on Saturday morning.
She tried to put the shoe back on as quickly as she could but realized that time was fast running out and her competitors were passing her too, so she decided to carry on with one bare foot.
Her actions gained her massive cheers from hundreds of the on-looking spectators at the Estadio Olimpico.
She went on to finish seventh in a time of 9:34.70. But the mark was more than 20 seconds off her personal best.
