Harsh economy affects Valentine’s day celebrations in Cape Town

NEDERBURG VALENTINE'S DAY (HR)

A  popular shop in Cape Town has everything you need to take and capture that special moment. And it has done a brisk trade on Valentine’s Day.

“It’s been wonderful. You know people just coming in and wanting to buy frames of their loved-ones and wanting to put special pictures in of them. It’s just been so awesome and vibey this morning.” Erica Thomas, Photographic salesperson

The flower sellers in the Cape Town City Centre who’ve been here for many decades, say Valentines Day has always been a special day on which they would make thousands upon thousands of Rands. This year has been a different story. And they’re not sure whether they should blame the ailing South African Rand or a sudden drop in romance.

“Sales were very poor. ‘Cos I think everything went up and the economy is very low. And the people don’t buy like they used to. I don’t know if love is lost or if the money’s too low.” Ilhaam Benjamin, Flower seller

But some romantic Capetonians say for them Love was definitely still alive, and well.
