Gunmen kill an Egypt policeman at Niger embassy
The hunt is on for unidentified gunmen who shot dead a security guard outside the embassy of Niger in Cairo.
According to the Egyptian interior ministry gunmen in a car opened fire on guards outside the embassy of the Western African republic at around 1:00 a.m local time.
The ministry says security services are searching for the perpetrators.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack in Giza, which is part of the greater Cairo metro area.
Egypt is facing an insurgency mainly based in North Sinai that has killed hundreds of soldiers and policemen since mid-2013, when then-army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ousted Islamist President Mohamed Mursi after protests against his rule.
Since the military toppled Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013, jihadist groups have carried out a string of attacks against security forces, killing hundreds of police and soldiers.
Most of the biggest attacks in recent months have taken place in the north of the Sinai peninsula, a stronghold of the jihadist group calling itself “Sinai Province”, which in November pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group.
Cairo has not been spared, however, and diplomatic missions have not been immune.
The IS-affiliated group claimed a car bombing outside the Italian Consulate in Cairo this month, the first attack against a foreign mission in Egypt since Morsi’s ouster. A civilian was killed and nine others were wounded.
