Gunfire heard in Republic of Congo’s capital Brazzaville
Troops have been deployed in the capital Brazzaville after a military barracks was attacked. Clashes have been ongoing in the capital, Brazzaville.
Police have been battling local militias in the southern part of the city. Some say it’s an attempted coup – although that can’t be confirmed at this stage. Others say there’s no coup.
The militia group fighting police is reportedly known as the Ninjas. Fires could be seen in the city. Reports indicate the battle started around 3 in the morning local time on Monday.
The Ninjas are an anti-government group. The fighting comes weeks after President Denis Sassou N’Guesso was re-elected, extending his 32 years in power. He’s due to be sworn in on Thursday
