Guinea, Mauritania and Mozambique unveil AFCON squads
Guinea have called up Naby Keita to their 25-man squad for next month’s African Cup of Nations finals in Côte d’Ivoire despite the former Liverpool star’s underwhelming form this season.
The 28-year-old midfielder has struggled for game time at Werder Bremen this season after his move from Liverpool but will skipper the squad headlined by VfB Stuttgart’s Sehrou Guirassy.
Guirassy has netted 17 Bundesliga goals, leaving him behind only Harry Kane in the German league’s scoring charts.
He will lead Guinea’s hunt for goals alongside teenage striker Facinet Conte who was handed a first call-up by coach Kaba Diawara.
The 18-year-old Conte was called up after scoring five goals in France’s Ligue 2 for Bastia this season while 33-year-old Jose Martinez Kante is recalled.
Guinea open their Group C campaign at the finals against Cameroon in Yamoussoukro on January 15. Senegal and Gambia are also in the group.
Meanwhile, Mauritania recalled former Ligue 1 midfielder El Hadji Ba with coach Amir Abdou handing a first call-up to teenager Oumar Ngom in his squad for next month’s showpiece.
They will be captained by Aly Abeid and are due to play Tunisia in a warm-up clash before heading to Côte d’Ivoire where they are pooled in Group D alongside Burkina Faso, Algeria and Angola.
Elsewhere, Mozambique named 40-year-old winger Dominguez to captain their squad at the continental event and also handed a first call-up to former German under-20 international Alfons Amade.
Dominguez competed for Mozambique when they last appeared at the finals in 2010 and is likely to be the oldest player at the tournament.
Mozambique will feature in Group B and will open their campaign against Egypt in Abidjan on January 14. They are meet the Cape Verde Islands and Ghana.
