When Ebola swept through a section of West Africa it affected every aspect of life including the one thing that is almost akin to religion – football. Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone couldn’t host international football matches after the epidemic.

Guinean football is however on the mend after the Ebola virus affected its domestic and international playing scene. Financially, clubs lost money in terms of revenue from gate collections. The biggest hit was in the stigma the players and officials faced internationally.

Guinea is the more developed football nation of the three worst hit Ebola countries, and was the worst affected.

The West African country however hosted Malawi in an AFCON qualifier played in the capital Conakry, holding the visitors to a barren draw.

This game was seen as a major boost in the country’s return to the football scene.

Guineans anticipated the game, filling the stadium just to watch their team hold their training sessions ahead of the Malawi duel.
