Group Wants to See a Woman’s Face on $20 Bill
Is it time for a feminine face to grace the ubiquitous $20 bill?
An organization called Women on 20s thinks so and it has launched a campaign to petition President Barack Obama to sign an executive order to replace Andrew Jackson with one of 15 women who changed the course of United States history.
It is hoped the historic change would be made in time for the new bill to be issued in 2020, the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote. The act was ratified on August 18, 1920, 47 years after it was first introduced in Congress by California Senator Aaron A. Sargent.
The organizers say the change would go a long way in promoting the bedrock principal of our democracy, that all people are created equal.
“We believe this simple, symbolic and long-overdue change could be an important stepping stone for other initiatives promoting gender equality,” said a statement on the Women on 20s website.
Or in simpler terms, as one of the kids in the video below said, “Maybe girls want to see a girl on the money.”
