Three people believed to be members of the ruling party’s youth wing were killed on Wednesday by an unknown man in Burundi’s capital, Reuters reports.

“(Wednesday’s) attack claimed the lives of three young men. Three others were injured, including a woman, her kid and a man, and they were rushed to hospital,” police spokesman Pierre Nkurikiye told reporters on Thursday, the report says.

Those killed belonged to the CNDD FDD party. Five suspects have since been arrested, including a Rwandan citizen, this according to the report.

Human rights situation in the country has deteriorated since 2015. There is alarming increase in extrajudicial killings, abductions and torture.

At least 700 people have been killed in violent clashes between supporters and opponents of President Pierre Nkurunziza since April 2015 when he said he would run for a third term in office.

More than 325,000 Burundians have fled the country since 2015 to neighbouring countries, most to Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
