Read < 1 minute

Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan has expressed his hopes that all the territories that were grabbed by the Islamist terror group, the Boko Haram, will have been retaken within a month.

Jonathan says all territory seized by the Islamist militant group Boko Haram will be retaken within a month, saying they are getting weaker and weaker by the day.

The president however admitted that the Nigerian security forces have been slow to respond to the insurgents’ initial advance in north-east Nigeria.

Nigeria’s army has recently claimed series of victories over the militants.

Meanwhile, Soldiers from Niger and Chad have taken the Nigerian town of Damasak from Boko Haram, another victory in a regional campaign to take back control of swaths of northeastern Nigeria from the armed group.

A spokesman for Niger’s army, Colonel Michel Ledru, said Damasak, which is a few kilometres from the border with Niger, has been taken from Boko Haram’s control.

He said 229 rebels were killed and one soldier from Niger died in heavy fighting.
