Ghana’s governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has endorsed incumbent president John Dramani Mahaha’s bid for a second term in office, for the elections slated for next year.
NDC members overwhelmingly backed the 56-year old to run for a second term, in primary party elections held on Saturday and Sunday.
President Mahama in his acceptance speech thanked those who voted for him and defended his record in power, which has seen growth in the emerging West African nation slow down.
“As a leader of the party, I believe not all members are pleased with some of my decisions,” he said, describing the last three years as a “challenge”.
Mahama was elected into the presidency after the death of former president John Atta Mills in 2012, and was voted in unopposed. He however still had to be endorsed in line with party rules.
No dates have yet been set for the election.
