Ghana’s Black Stars sign agreement with government to accept any bonus offered
Ghana’s football team that is in Gabon for the Africa Cup of Nations has agreed to accept whatever bonus pay the government will offer in order to avoid a recurrence of past rows.
The Ghana football Association announced the decision, saying the players wanted to show they are ready to play for their nation and not motivated only by money.
The Black Stars have been criticized in the past of putting money before patriotism.
During the 2014 Brazil World Cup, the Ghanaian government sent more than $3m in cash by plane to pay the players.
In 2010 there was also a bonus row.
Ghana reached the quarter-finals at the World Cup in South Africa seven years ago, but the achievement was soured by a dispute over payments of $63,000 that were promised to each player.
The current squad’s stance is designed to help win the backing of their supporters and ensure the focus is on what happens on the pitch in Gabon.
The Black Stars beat Uganda in their AFCON 2017 first match through an Andre Ayew penalty in the first half.
Their secong game will be against Mali on Saturday.
