Read < 1 minute

A Ghanaian man drowned on Sunday during a baptism ceremony in a river located to the south of the country’s capital, Accra.

A video had been circulating among social media users in the West African country, showing the harrowing ordeal.

In the video, Yaw Kyeremeh is seen preparing for his baptism, before a pastor immersed him into the water after brief prayers.

He emerged from the water and was immersed a second time, but this time he did not emerge.

BBC news agency quotes Accra Regional Police Command spokeswoman Afia Tenge to say a junior pastor had been arrested at the scene, while police are still searching for the lead pastor of the church involved in the baptism.

Local media report the man’s family to have said they don’t blame anyone for Kyeremeh’s death.

Police said the 20-year-old’s body was in a mortuary, and an autopsy still needed to be done before it was given to the family for burial.
