Newly elected Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has pledged that his government is going to push Ghana’s participation in activities of the West African sub-regional body, Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and continental organ, African Union (A.U).

According to a report by local media, the President said that Ghana will continue to provide leadership in the organizations to ensure the set targets of the organizations are reached.

With Ghana’s first President Kwame Nkrumah legacy partly made of the Nkrumah’s critical role in the formation of the two bodies, the current president sees it fit to maintain that status quo.

“All the friendship and alliances will be maintained,” said Akufo-Addo, adding “Our common humanity requires that we form partnerships that will lead to transformation…enhancement of the quality of lives.”

Although Ghana has a population of a little over 26 million, it is the fourth largest contributor to peacekeeping in Africa.

Ghana has committed over 208 troops in the ECOWAS forces safeguarding The Gambia as the country transitions to peace & democracy after long serving President Yahya Jammeh caused tension briefly after refusing to hand over power to elected President Adama Barrow.

President Akufo-Addo takes pride in Ghana’s efforts that “made it possible for peaceful resolution” in the small West African country.

The President further added that his government is determined to show that “we can emulate the success of Asian nations,” by putting an end to economic “handouts” received from donor bodies.

“My government is not going to shy away from taking the critical decision,” said Akofu-Addo
