Ghana orders National Football coach to come back from Europe TV work
Ghana orders national team coach Avram Grant to return to the country to concentrate on his job due to approaching African Nations Cup qualifiers this month rather than appearing as expert commentator on British television.
Ghana Football Association spokesman Ibrahim Sannie told Reuters that Grant should be watching the local football matches to unearth talent rather than serving as a pundit on Sky Sports.
“We have ordered him to return from Europe to monitor the local league…. The matches against Mozambique are approaching and we need him.” Said Sannie
Ghana will play Mozambique away from home in the African Nations Cup qualifiers on the 24th March and 27th March. Grant is expected in Ghana soon to prepare the squad for the matches.
According to Ghana’s Parliamentarian Kojo Baah Agyemang, it is unacceptable for the former Chelsea and West Ham boss to spend his time out of the country, and has been “Taking the country for granted”
Grant is not the first manager of an African national side criticized for not spending time in Europe. The excuse used by many managers abroad is that it allows them to easily monitor Ghanaian players based there.
Israeli-born Grant took over as Ghana coach in late 2014 and within months led the Black Stars to a place in the final of the 2015 African Nations Cup where they lost to Ivory Coast on penalties.
Grant could not be immediately reached for comment.
