Ghana looking for alternative ways to generate enough electricity for local consumption and export
Ghanaian President John Mahama has urged the University of Energy and Natural Resources in Ghana to search for resolutions to the current economic energy challenges by harnessing a variety of energy resources and biofuels including the nuclear energy in order to achieve a sustainable energy capacity for the nation and for export.
“Indeed, my vision is to make Ghana a net exporter of Power when the West Africa Regional electricity market becomes operational sometime next year,” said the President during the maiden congregation of the university.
President Mahama expressed his desire to make Ghana a major power exporter. Mahama recently inaugurated the first unit of the Sonon-Asogoli power project phase two in the greater Accra Region of Ghana. The new phase added 360 megawatts of gas fired power to its national grid.
Ghana is also developing a multi-billion dollar Sankofa Gye Nyame gas fields, the largest project ever guaranteed by the World Bank. The gas fields will start producing off shore oil for Ghana. Initial gas is expected in the first quarter of 2018, providing a reliable base-load natural gas enough to generate up to 1,100MW of power… becoming a major contributor to ending Ghana’s perennial energy crises with an expected impact on the economy of according to the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Mr. Alexander Kofi Mensah Mould.
“A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to cut a sod for the commencement of an onshore receiving facilities for Sankofa gas… . It is estimated at 1.5 trillion cubic feet. It is capable of supplying Ghana with 1000 megawatts of power for the next 20 years.” Said the President
