Ghana government rejects calls by the police to ban social media during elections
Ghana government has assured citizens that it will not block the social media on the Election Day in December contrary to Inspector General of Police proposal to do so reports Myjoyonline
“I would like to emphasise that as of today, and within the context of the upcoming elections, neither the government nor any of the security agencies has plans to disrupt social media during this year’s election,” said the Ghanaian Interior Minister, Prosper Bani
Inspector General Police had stirred the public when announced that the police is considering banning the social media on the Election Day to ensure peaceful elections. He repeated the sentiments during a meeting with police chiefs recently in Ho, the Volt Region capital.
The United Nations would not endorse any attempts to ban social media in Ghana during elections according to the special representative of the United Nations secretary general for West Africa.
