Germany’s Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier began the first leg of his four-day tour of Africa today.

Steinmeier arrived in the south-eastern state of Mozambique on Thursday to kick off his tour of the continent.

He was due to meet Mozambique’s President Felipe Nyusi for talks in the capital Maputo later in the day.

Mozambique’s economy has been recovering from the aftermath of a devastating civil war that ravaged the country between 1977 and 1992.

The former Portuguese colony hopes for faster growth after the recent discovery of gas reserves.

Majority of Mozambique’s 27 million people however continue to live in great poverty.

After Mozambique, Steinmeier will also visit Zambia, Uganda and Tanzania before flying back to Berlin on Monday.

The minister is accompanied by a delegation of economic and cultural representatives.
