
German Chancellor Angela Merkel to visit Egypt this week
The Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel is expected to arrive in Egypt on 2nd March for an official visit.
Angela Merkel will meet with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, accompanied by a high-level business delegation, according to Daily News.
The two leaders are expected to hold bilateral talks with emphasis on economic relations between both countries, the situation in Libya, the fight against terrorism, regional issues and Africa’s security, as well as illegal migration.
German government spokesperson Steffen Seibert confirmed the visit during a press conference in Berlin on Friday. Egyptian ambassador Badr Abdelatty’s in early February stated that the visit would take place in March.
Merkel is scheduled to meet with the prime minister as well to discuss cooperation between both countries and will also meet with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmed Al-Tayeb, and the head of Egypt’s Coptic Orthodox Church, Pope Tawadros II.
This would be the chancellor’s first visit to Egypt since Al-Sisi was elected president and after meeting Al-Sisi in Berlin in 2015. Merkel has however visited Egypt in 2008 and 2009 and also received both President Mohamed Morsi and Hosni Mubarak, in the German capital.
Germans accounted for the greatest number of tourists to visit Egypt in 2016, at 655,000 people, according to a foreign ministry statement.
Merkel is scheduled to visit Tunis and meet with the Tunisian president and his prime minister.
