German Chancellor Angela Merkel cancels visit to Algeria

Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, has cancelled her trip to Algeria following Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika poor health according to a report Algeria Presse Service.

President of the Republic of Algeria  Abdelaziz Bouteflika is “temporarily unavailable” due to “acute bronchitis,” according to the Presidency of the Republic in a communique on Monday.

“Algerian and German authorities agreed today to postpone the official visit of the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Angela Merkel, to Algeria,” said the communiqué

The Presidency further stated that the visit will be rescheduled to a date agreed on by the two sides.

According to Reuters, after suffering a stroke in 2013, Bouteflika is now rarely seen in public, mostly appearing in state media for meetings with visiting dignitaries.
