Former Cote D’Ivoire President Laurent Gbagbo intends to return to his homeland after his release by the International Criminal Court, his daughter told Reuters on Wednesday.
However, Marie Laurence Gbagbo declined to comment on her father’s possible political ambitions.
“My father will not live in any other country than Cote D’Ivorie. He would go back and we expect him to go back,” the younger Gbagbo said in the interview.
The International Criminal Court acquitted Laurent Gbagbo on war crimes charges and ordered he be set free.
But prosecutors have asked judges to bar Mr. Gbagbo from traveling to Cote D’Ivorie over fears he would not return to The Hague for appeals.
After Gbagbo’s arrest and extradition in 2011, Cote D’Ivorie’s government has not cooperated with the court in other matters, prosecutors said in a statement.
